I known some people are very excited about this. What I don't understand(and never have) is why. At no point have I ever missed the 10 minute run to Emain

That could be interesting.  It all really depends on what they keep and what they change.  Will they be dropping all expansion packs and all that has come along with them?  What would happen when new xpacs come out?  Will they keep battlegrounds in or after 3 weeks of launch if you're not 50 don't bother going to the frontier for RvR or XP?  Will they remove all of the enhancements for cap increases and swing/cast speed etc... When the classic servers came out and people couldn't cap those as easily many players left the servers because they wanted the bigger/better/faster etc...  People think back to the old days and going out to the frontier for XP groups.  That will never happen, even on these servers, the old camps are well known and will be patrolled by other realms looking for rps.  The old keeps had serious flaws to them, will enchanters be able to PBAE through walls and gates again?  Will archers be able to volley through the roofs again?  Running to emain did stink, and unless you were in a regular group you were screwed.

Nostalgia clouds the vision of many people.  I loved the old frontiers and knew them like the back of my hand.  I knew where to find lowbies xping and i knew where to go for xp that I would never be found, unless someone was using radar.  I hated getting stuck in lame standoffs at the mile gates, casters of course loved those.  Some of my most memorable fights were in old frontiers, it was almost set up for small groups, new frontiers is so large and much of it is empty that finding a fight other than the zerg or a keep is hard.  I hate with a passion how the RW map shows any and every fight on it.

It would indeed be very interesting to see this server. However, I cannot get overly excited about it until I see more details.  What about the epic quests will they go back to the old format and the old armour stats/design?  If you really think about it for a while there are so many questions about how this server would be implemented.

Eh, they're all irrelevant to me now. I think Classic is about as close to perfect as currently exists in an MMO, but even it has quite a few flaws. My accounts are active so I might go check it out, but really I don't think anything is going to outdo Classic except WAR.

I really enjoyed the classic servers.  I don't know how they are performing under the new expansions but looking at the herald it doesn't lok like the game is performing so great with all normal servers clustered down to 2.

Honestly I think that instead of trying to go back in time they should look forward and develop DAOC 2.  The game is nearly 7 years old and although MMO's evolve and grow with time eventually they reach a point where they can't continue to evolve in a healthy manner.  I believe it was about 6-7 years old when EQ released EQ2 (I don't know how closely related the two were.)  and I believe it was about 6 years after initial release that UO did it's major rebuild, of course that failed and the game was basically dead at that point... Does UO even still exist at this point?  Anyway back to my point, DAOC has reached the point where new subscribers are really not something that it will attract, and everyone that has played it either continues to play or has left for a reason (not nessacarily related to the game, work, school, life, etc)  In order to get a large new base of subscribers and returning players they need a new game.  Perhaps rather than building DAOC2 they are just going to take WAR and run with that and allow DAOC to go offline in a year or two.

UO actually has more subs right now than DAOC I think. They've said they won't make a DAOC2 and I really don't see the point. Mechanically WAR is DAOC2. There's really only one game on the horizon that's out to grab DAOCs niche and that's WAR. If anything finally kills it off, it'll be Mythic's own new game. It's got battlegrounds, it's got "frontier style" RvR, keeps, sieges, etc. Pretty much everything that DAOC has.

I Agree with Q, WAR is the way to go. They plan to release Origins around the same time WAR will be released. I personally will be playing WAR.

The most enjoyable part of the old frontiers was the SUPER LONG walks to the noob areas, as a ranger, killing people. Sure it took a LONG ASS time to get there, but man... that shit was fun once you did. I highly doubt that same amount of fun will return when Origins is released. I hated running to emain solo to get my ass handed to me by 8man elitest. There were definitely time where we had some KILLER SC groups out there. We weren't the most kick ass groups but we knew how to have fun.

Pretty much what it come down to is this... to little too late!

Yeah, the run from Qeynos to Freeport was awesome.

Better yet, leveling trade skills.  Anyone care to make some arrows?

Where is home? I've wondered where home is, and I realized, it's not Mars or someplace like that, it's Indianapolis when I was nine years old. I had a brother and a sister, a cat and a dog, and a mother and a father and uncles and aunts. And there's no way I can get there again.        Kurt Vonnegut

Well, I may have a change of heart. I'll decide when it's released but IF I return it wont be for Hibernia.

I love playing WAR but there is so much about DAOC that is lacking in WAR. One great example is the diversity with the three realm concept. Another is that RvR in WAR has no meaning... ZERO. Relics in DAOC make for something that is worth fighting over, not PVE'n a keep and moving on to the next when destro shows up.

So yeah, that's my two cents. Skald or Therg here I come :P

I do dig WAR, but yeah, I agree that the classes are way too homogenized and I always like the three way combat.  Yeah sure there is a lot more balance in WAR, but that's cause the classes are the same.  There was always something cool about the vast diversity of classes and specializations with the classes in DAOC.  If they do this origins server, man, that just might do it for me.
Never underestimate the importance of a good pre-ride dump!

just the other day I was talking about how old school emain was pretty much perfect.  There was always something going on, you could find 8v8 if you wanted it, zerg battles, stealth wars, keep takes, etc...  Three way combat kept everyone on their toes never knowing when an assjam was about to come from the other realms.  Everything was in a consolidated area and was essentially easy to access.  I miss it.  I doubt I'll go back and play though.  I will probably shut down WAR soon it's proving to be a bit too much of a distraction and my semester is suffering.
